Green Man Gaming: How Game Keys, Region Locks and Monthly Codes Work

Green Man Gaming is a UK-based online store that sells digital game keys, mostly for PC. You pay Green Man Gaming, receive a key, and redeem it on the platform the game runs on, usually Steam, but also the EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, the Epic Games Store or others depending on the title.

Green Man Gaming is an authorised retailer: it buys keys from publishers and distributors, so its keys are official. The things that decide whether an order goes well are the platform, the region and the edition.

How a Green Man Gaming key works

After payment, the key appears in your Green Man Gaming account library, and sometimes in the order email. Copy it into the activation box of the platform named on the product page. On Steam, that is Add a Game, then Activate a Product on Steam.

Once a key is revealed or redeemed, it is spent. That is why digital keys are generally non-refundable after the key has been revealed. Check the current Green Man Gaming refund terms before buying, and do not reveal a key until you are ready to activate it.

Some large new releases may be released in stages. Pre-orders deliver the key at or near launch, and the product page states when.

Check the platform first

Every Green Man Gaming listing names the platform the key activates on. A game that exists on Steam and on the Epic Games Store may be sold on Green Man Gaming as one or the other. If your friends and saves are on Steam, make sure the listing says Steam.

Some publisher games also need that publisher's launcher and account even when activated through Steam. The product page usually notes third-party account requirements. Read it before paying.

Region locks are the main trap

Many game keys are region-locked: they activate only in certain countries or regions, or activate but will not run until you are in the right region. Green Man Gaming shows the store region and restricts some products by country.

Buy from the Green Man Gaming store that matches where your platform account is registered. Do not buy a key while travelling, or through a VPN, expecting it to work at home; region mismatches are a common reason a key will not activate, and a revealed key is hard to refund.

Prices are shown in your local currency, so the same Green Man Gaming product can cost different amounts in different regions.

Choose the right edition

Big games come in Standard, Deluxe, Gold, Ultimate and similar editions. The difference is usually a season pass, cosmetic packs or early access days, not a different game. Read the list of what each edition adds on the Green Man Gaming page.

If you are not sure you will play the expansions, buy the standard edition. Season passes and DLC can be bought later, often on sale. Check that DLC you buy on Green Man Gaming matches your base game's platform and region.

XP rewards and the Green Man Gaming account

Green Man Gaming has run an XP loyalty scheme, where purchases earn XP and levelling up unlocks rewards such as discounts or vouchers. The details change; check your account for the current levels. It rewards people who buy most of their games from one store.

Keep your Green Man Gaming account secured with a strong password, since it holds unrevealed keys that have a cash value.

When prices drop

Green Man Gaming runs its own sales and joins the big seasonal ones, around summer, autumn, Black Friday and the winter holidays. New releases rarely get deep cuts at launch, but pre-orders and launch-week discounts do appear. Older games fall further in publisher sales.

Compare the Green Man Gaming price with the platform's own store before buying, including any code, since Steam's own sales sometimes match or beat a key price.

Where the Green Man Gaming savings are

The 18% code is the highest, and is likely aimed at new customers or new releases. Try it first.

Green Man Gaming issues a monthly 15% code, named for the month. The JUN15 code shown is one of those; if it has lapsed, the current month's version is usually the one to use.

The 12% code is a fallback for items the others exclude. Many Green Man Gaming codes only apply to selected titles or to full-price games, so a code that fails on one game may work on another.

Only one code applies per order. On an already-discounted game, check that the code actually reduces the price further before paying.
