The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is a non-profit that cares for the architect's legacy. Its website, franklloydwright.org, sells tours of Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, Wright's winter home and studio, along with memberships and a store of design objects, books, prints and gifts.
Buying well here is about choosing the right tour, deciding whether membership pays for itself, and knowing which store items are licensed Frank Lloyd Wright designs. This guide covers each.
Choosing a Taliesin West tour
Taliesin West offers several tour types, from a standard guided tour of the main spaces to longer in-depth tours and special evening or themed options. Tour names and schedules change by season, so check what is running on your dates.
A shorter tour suits a first visit with limited time. The longer tours go into more rooms and more of Wright's design thinking, which is worth it for anyone with a real interest in architecture.
Book ahead in peak season, which in Arizona is the cooler months from autumn to spring. Summer brings heat and fewer visitors; tours often run early in the day.
What to expect on the day
Taliesin West sits in the desert foothills, and tours include walking outdoors on uneven ground. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and sun protection, and check the accessibility information before booking if anyone in your group has limited mobility.
Photography rules vary between spaces. Guides will say where it is allowed. Arrive a little early, since tours start on time.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation also cares for Taliesin in Wisconsin, where tours are run with a partner organisation. Check which site a ticket is for before paying.
Is membership worth it
Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation membership supports the preservation work and typically includes benefits such as free or discounted tours, a store discount and member events, depending on the level.
Work it out for your plans. If you will visit Taliesin West more than once, bring guests, or buy from the store, a Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation membership may cover itself. For a single visit, a tour ticket alone is usually cheaper.
Membership is partly a donation to a non-profit. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and the benefits received; ask a tax adviser rather than assuming the full amount is deductible.
The Frank Lloyd Wright store
The store sells licensed reproductions and objects based on Frank Lloyd Wright designs, including lamps, glassware, textiles, prints, jewellery, books and puzzles. Licensed products carry the Foundation's approval, and sales support its work.
Frank Lloyd Wright reproduction lamps and furniture are the high-value pieces. Read the specifications: dimensions, materials, bulb type and whether a lamp is wired for US voltage.
Books range from guidebooks to photography and scholarly works. They make good companions to a tour and often cost less than the objects.
Gifts and timing
Frank Lloyd Wright prints, puzzles, textiles and stationery suit gifts for design fans. Check framing details, since some prints ship unframed.
The store tends to run its biggest promotions around Black Friday and the holidays. Tour prices are more stable, with seasonal changes in the tours offered rather than big discounts.
Gift memberships and tour gift cards are another option for a Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiast. Check how long a gift membership remains valid and whether the recipient needs to activate it, and note that tours still need booking for a specific date and time.
Shipping and returns
The Frank Lloyd Wright store ships within the US and may ship internationally. Large or fragile items like lamps and glass can carry higher shipping costs; check the total before paying.
Returns are accepted on eligible items within a stated window. Check the current policy, especially for prints, personalised goods and sale items. Tour tickets are generally governed by their own cancellation terms.
Where the Frank Lloyd Wright savings are
The 25% code looks like a Black Friday store promotion. It will most likely work on store orders and not on tour tickets. Try it in the store checkout and read any expiry message.
The membership code adds three months to a new Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation membership. If you are already planning to join, it stretches the membership's value; it is not a reason to join by itself.
The spring code is listed at 20% off, although its name suggests 15%. Enter it on a store basket and check which discount the Frank Lloyd Wright checkout actually applies before paying; outside spring it may have lapsed.
Codes usually cannot combine, and members may already have a store discount. Compare the member price with the code before choosing.
