Car hire advertises a daily rate and charges for a dozen other things. With Europcar, as with any hire company, the headline price is rarely the total — and the gap is mostly insurance and fuel.
Excess is the number that matters
A Europcar booking includes basic cover with an excess — the amount you pay if the car is damaged. That figure is frequently substantial, often over a thousand in local currency.
At the desk you will be offered excess reduction. It is expensive per day and it is where hire companies make their margin.
The cheaper route is usually a standalone excess insurance policy bought separately, or cover through a credit card or travel policy you already hold. An annual standalone policy frequently costs less than a week of desk cover.
The catch with third-party cover: the hire company still blocks the full excess on your card and you claim it back afterwards. You need the available credit, and you need to be comfortable with the reimbursement process.
Check what cover you already have before travelling. People routinely buy at the desk something their card already provides.
Check exclusions carefully — tyres, glass, undercarriage and roof are commonly excluded from basic cover and are exactly what gets damaged.
Fuel policy
Full to full is almost always the cheapest. You collect it full, return it full, and pay only for what you use at normal pump prices.
Pre-purchase or full to empty means buying a tank from the hire company, usually above pump price, with no refund for what you leave. You only break even by returning it nearly empty, which nobody manages.
Choose full to full where offered, and keep the final fuel receipt from a station near the return point. That receipt is your evidence if a refuelling charge appears.
Note the fuel type before driving off. Misfuelling is expensive and is not covered by anything.
The fees that appear later
Young driver surcharge applies below a certain age, typically under 25, and is charged per day.
Additional driver is charged per driver per day. An unregistered driver at the wheel voids the insurance entirely — that is not a technicality, it is the whole cover gone.
Cross-border travel must be declared. Taking a car into a country not on your agreement can void cover and incurs a fee where permitted at all.
One-way fees for returning to a different location can be large.
Out-of-hours return, additional equipment and toll devices all carry charges.
Add these up before comparing Europcar against another quote. A cheaper daily rate with a young driver fee and one-way charge is frequently the more expensive booking.
Avoiding damage disputes
This is the most common complaint in car hire and it is largely preventable.
Photograph the car thoroughly before driving away — all four sides, the roof, the wheels and alloys, the windscreen, and the interior. Date-stamped photos, in good light.
Make sure every existing mark is noted on the check-out sheet before you sign. If the light is poor, say so and note it.
Photograph it again at return, including the fuel gauge and the odometer.
Get a signed check-in confirming no new damage where possible. An out-of-hours return with no inspection is when disputes happen.
Europcar brands, Privilege and car groups
Europcar operates more than one rental brand. The Europcar group has included low-cost brands such as Goldcar and InterRent, and a cheap result on a comparison site may be one of those rather than Europcar itself. Terms, desk locations and deposit rules differ, so check which brand you are actually booking.
Europcar's loyalty scheme, Privilege, is free to join and aims at faster collection and member perks at higher tiers. Check the current Privilege benefits before counting on any of them.
Europcar books cars by category, not by model. "Or similar" means exactly that, so if you need boot space for four suitcases, choose by the category's luggage guide rather than the photo.
If you need an automatic, book one specifically. Across much of Europe manual is the default, and automatics at a busy Europcar desk run out first.
Where the Europcar savings are
Europcar codes vary widely by region and by booking country:
Several Europcar codes are explicitly region-scoped — the code names tell you as much. A code that fails is usually wrong for your country rather than expired.
Booking earlier is generally cheaper than at the desk, and booking direct makes changes simpler than through a broker.
A cheaper broker rate sometimes comes with a different insurance arrangement. Compare the total including excess cover, not the headline.
Enter a Europcar code on the booking country's own site, and read the rate conditions. Prepaid Europcar rates are often cheaper and less flexible to change or cancel.
Common questions
Should I buy excess cover at the desk?
Usually not — standalone policies or existing card cover are cheaper. But the hire company will still block the excess on your card.
Which fuel policy is best?
Full to full, and keep the receipt from a station near the return point.
How do I avoid a damage charge?
Photograph everything before driving away and at return, and get existing marks noted before you sign.
Why is my Europcar car a different model?
Europcar books by category, not model. Choose the group by seats and luggage space.
