Dropbox Plans: Free Basic vs Paid Storage, Monthly vs Annual Billing, and Team Tiers

Dropbox is a cloud storage and file-sync service. Files placed in a Dropbox folder sync across your computers and phone, can be shared by link, and are kept in the cloud with a history of earlier versions. Plans run from a free Basic account to paid personal, family and team tiers.

Buying Dropbox well comes down to three questions: how much storage you really need, whether you are one person, a household or a team, and whether you will commit to a year. The answers point to one plan and one billing choice.

Is free Dropbox Basic enough?

Dropbox Basic gives a small amount of free storage, 2 GB, and has limited the number of devices that can sync. For sharing a few documents or moving files between two machines, that can be all you need.

Photos and video fill 2 GB fast. If your phone backs up its camera roll to Dropbox, you will hit the limit within weeks, and syncing stops until you clear space or upgrade.

Basic users have been able to earn a little extra space by referring friends. It helps at the margins but will not turn Dropbox Basic into a photo archive.

Personal plans: Plus and Family

Dropbox Plus is the single-user paid plan, with a large storage allowance, more devices, longer version history and extras such as larger file transfers. It suits one person with a lot of photos, documents or project files.

A Dropbox Family plan shares one storage pool across several members of a household, each with their own private account, plus a shared folder. If two or three people in a home would each pay for Dropbox Plus, Family is usually cheaper. Check the current member limit and storage on the Dropbox plans page.

Professional and team plans

Dropbox also sells plans for freelancers and small businesses, with more storage, longer file recovery, and tools for sending large files, collecting signatures and reviewing video. Team plans add admin controls, user management and per-user pricing with a minimum seat count.

Buy the team plan only if you need the admin side: someone who can add and remove people, control sharing and recover files when a person leaves. A two-person partnership often does fine on two personal Dropbox plans.

Compare what each Dropbox tier adds, not just the storage number. Version history length, file recovery and transfer size limits are often the real difference.

Monthly or annual billing

Dropbox charges less per month on annual billing than on monthly billing. If you know you will use Dropbox for a year, annual is the cheaper way to pay.

Monthly billing makes sense for a short project or when trying a paid plan. Most Dropbox paid plans have offered a free trial; set a reminder before it converts to a paid subscription.

Prices can differ by country and by where you subscribe. Paying through a phone's app store can cost more than paying on the Dropbox website.

Version history and recovery

Every Dropbox plan keeps earlier versions of files and deleted files for a period, and paid plans keep them longer. This is what rescues you from an accidental overwrite or deletion.

It is not a full backup of your computer unless you use Dropbox Backup or place those folders in Dropbox. Keep a second copy of anything irreplaceable somewhere else.

Downgrading and cancelling

If you cancel a paid Dropbox plan, the account drops back to Basic at the end of the billing period. Files above the Basic limit stay in the cloud, but syncing stops until you are back under it. Clear space or download what you need first.

Annual Dropbox plans have commonly not been refunded pro rata after the start of the term. Check the current refund terms before committing to a year.

Where the Dropbox savings are

DROPBOXHOLIDAY — 25% offSHOW COUPON CODE
DROPBOXWINTERSALE — $20 offSHOW COUPON CODE
DROPBOXlenovo-storage-offer — free storage offerSHOW COUPON CODE

The 25% Dropbox code is the better choice on an annual plan, where the bill is large enough that a percentage beats a fixed amount. It is seasonal, so it may only apply at certain times of year or to new subscriptions.

The $20 code suits a smaller purchase, such as a first year on a cheaper plan or a monthly plan where it applies. It beats 25% on any bill under $80.

The Lenovo storage offer is linked to eligible Lenovo devices, which have come with bonus Dropbox storage. If you do not own one, skip it.

Dropbox promo codes are usually for new paid subscriptions and do not combine. Enter them on the Dropbox website checkout, not in an app store purchase.

Common questions

How much storage does free Dropbox give?

Dropbox Basic gives 2 GB, with a small referral bonus possible. Heavy photo users will need a paid plan.

Is Dropbox cheaper on annual billing?

Yes. The monthly equivalent is lower on annual Dropbox billing than on monthly.

What happens to my files if I cancel Dropbox?

They stay stored, but sync stops if you are over the Basic limit. Download or clear files first.

Is Dropbox Family worth it?

If two or more people in one household would pay for Dropbox Plus, Family is usually cheaper.
