Air India is India's flag carrier, now owned by the Tata group and merged with Vistara. It flies a large domestic network and long-haul routes to North America, Europe, the Gulf, Asia and Australia. Its sister airline, Air India Express, runs the low-cost flights and is booked separately.
A good Air India booking depends on three choices: the fare family, the cabin and the baggage your route actually includes. The cheapest fare on the results page is often not the cheapest trip.
Reading Air India fare families
Each Air India cabin is sold in several fare families, with names that have included Comfort, Comfort Plus and Flex in economy. The seat is the same; the rules around it differ.
The cheapest family usually carries the highest change and cancellation fees, and may limit seat selection or refunds. Higher families reduce or remove those fees and add benefits such as free seat choice or more baggage.
Compare the price gap with the fees you might pay. If your plans are firm, the lowest Air India fare is fine. If there is any chance of changing dates, the flexible family often costs less than one change fee.
Fare rules are shown on the Air India booking page before payment. Read them, because they vary by route and date.
Economy, premium economy or business
Air India's older and newer aircraft differ a great deal, and the cabin on your flight depends on which aircraft is operating. The airline has been refitting its fleet and adding new aircraft, so products vary route by route.
Premium economy, where offered, gives a wider seat, more legroom and better meals. On a long-haul Air India flight of ten hours or more, it is often the best value upgrade.
Business class on long-haul routes offers lie-flat seats on most aircraft. On domestic flights the business cabin is a larger recliner, and the value is in the lounge, priority and baggage rather than sleep.
Check the aircraft type on the Air India booking and the seat map before paying for a premium cabin, so you know which product you are buying.
Baggage: check the route, not a rule
Air India baggage allowances depend on the route, the cabin and the fare family. Domestic flights, flights to the Gulf and flights to North America can follow different systems, some by weight and some by piece.
Your allowance is shown on the itinerary and in the booking. Check it before you pack, and pre-pay for extra bags online if you need them, as that is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.
If your trip includes a flight on another airline or on Air India Express, the allowance can change between legs. Confirm what applies to the whole journey.
Maharaja Club points
Maharaja Club is the Air India loyalty programme, which replaced Flying Returns. It is free to join, and you earn points on Air India flights and on partner airlines in the Star Alliance.
Add your membership number to every Air India booking. Points earned depend on the fare paid and the fare family, so the cheapest fares often earn the least.
Points can be used for award flights and upgrades. Award availability is limited on popular dates, so plan redemptions early.
Status tiers add lounge access, extra baggage and priority services. For most occasional travellers the free tier is enough; the value is simply in collecting points.
Paying, fees and booking direct
Booking on the Air India website or app keeps the airline as your only contact if something changes. Third-party sites can be cheaper at times, but changes and refunds then go through them.
Air India accepts cards, UPI and net banking for bookings made in India. Some promotions only work with a particular bank card or payment method, so read the payment terms before choosing a code.
Check the final price, including taxes and any convenience fee, on the last page before paying. That is the figure to compare between Air India and other airlines.
Where the Air India savings are
Three Air India codes to try, suited to different bookings:
Air India percentage codes usually apply to the base fare, not to taxes and fees. On a cheap domestic ticket, where taxes are a large share, the real saving is smaller than the headline.
The UPI code is limited to domestic bookings paid by UPI, and the INR 2,000 is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Check the minimum fare and the payment method before you rely on it.
Codes are generally single-use per booking and may exclude certain fare families or dates. Compare the discounted Air India price with a sale fare; during a sale, a lower fare can beat a code.
Common questions
Which Air India fare should I book?

Is Air India Express the same as Air India?
No. Air India Express is a separate low-cost airline in the same group, with its own fares, baggage rules and website.
